Finishing up our discussi
on on how the health care bill affects different sectors- today is health insurance companies!
In essence, these companies would face sweeping federal regulations. A percentage of income from premiums would be required to go to medical care. If not, insurers would have to provide consumer rebates. The amounts are 85% of premiums for large group plans and 80% for small group plans and individual plans.
But what appears to be the most important change for insurance companies regarding the health care bill won’t be put into effect until 2014: from that point forward, companies will not be permitted to turn people with medical problems away, nor will they be able to charge them higher premiums. This is when the insurance exchanges will open.
With the devastation and tragedy of the 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti recently, it is easy to wonder why and how these events occur. We can only be grateful that we live where we do and do our best to help those in such a desperate need.
